Description

More unplanned chalk brush work.
Before anyone asks, yes it is far from finished, and for good reason. My main goal at the moment is mastering composition and value. If we go by what this guy says [link] (and looking at what he does, why wouldn't you). Detailing can be the longest yet easiest part. I figure that I'll just stick to composition and value and hope that it gives me the best use of my time. Of course it means no really nice pieces for you guys to look at sorry, but if I can get better quicker doing these half pieces then so be it. I guess at the moment I kind of view it as like drawing windows and doors on a house(detailing), but doesn't matter how good you make them look if all your walls and floor are crooked(composition).

On to the piece above, the only idea I went into this with was ponies falling.
Once I got a general feel of what I wanted I decided to add some extra rules or whatever to make it a bit more challenging.

I tried to keep in mind;
Perspective (Ponies close, birds and maybe mountains middle, clouds and horizon far)
Value (Things in the distance get lighter and other stuff)
Eye-flow (Dash's left wing draws the eye inwards and her hair, face, arm, right wing and tail all point the eye toward Rarity. The thinning horizon and clouds point back toward Dash. Rarity I didn't really bother with eye-flow too much rather I tried to get the motion of falling.)

And the added stuff;
Don't be afraid to rotate the horizon.
Don't be afraid the change the field of view (can best be seen where the land curves down and the sky curves up)
Don't be afraid to crop parts of a character or shot.
I found viewing this on a white background leads the eye out of the piece too much so put a black border to keep the eyes in.

Lastly I am totally self taught on all this stuff and its getting harder for me to critique my own stuff, so if you think I have no idea what I'm on about, have helpful hints, etc or just think these descriptions I do are annoying then please say so.

Certainly lots of cool experimental stuff going on. :D Not sure what I could critique on, but based on the description, I think you're achieving your goal thus far. :nod:
